Fifteen Years Ago on Moonbase Alpha…

Just for fun, thinking back to this time of year in 2009, what was happening right around now?

  • Phil Merkel and I were trying to keep the Powys web-site up and running — which was no easy task given the Internet host where the site used to live, while trying to migrate content from the old website to the new one, which would allow Powys Media to host its own free-wheeling forum (where we could drop clever hints about upcoming releases while misleading everyone whenever possible).
  • Elena Cambio and I were frantically proofreading Born for Adversity (while yours truly was story editing at the same time)…
  • The Space:1999 Audiobook audio files were being transferred back and forth between Phil Merkel and myself, trying to figure out on how on earth to get this thing released (but what a thrill to be hearing Barry Morse’s voice so often!).
  • I was trying to reconvene the “Jackie Crawford Story” group and get their story for Shepherd Moon ready for publication.
  • I was trying to get Shepherd Moon, Born for Adversity, Omega, and Alpha all into shape to order proof copies from our print on demand company, a first for Powys.
  • Phil and I were playing with how to hide the graphic of a hand somewhere in the plumbing of the Powys site where search engines wouldn’t find it — said graphic provided by Ken Scott, who was cranking out covers like mad…
  • When the ball dropped at Times Square at midnight on December 31st, 2009, yours truly paused from scanning Year One omnibus pages to watch, then scanned more pages until about 2 AM — yes, the omnibus was being worked on that early!

Those were good times — well, not really. 2010 was a fun year to harvest what was planted in 2009, and December of 2009 in particular was a roller-coaster ride of activity. It was a very different world and a very different time, but it’s something I think of every late December now.

Happy Holidays to all, and see you in 2025…

  1. Happy holidays to you too.
Hopefully all this hard work will be available again at some point – in some media form or another.
It complemented and completed the original S99 story so well.
    …Let’s hope.
